Spindles made of sandalwood have been used to spin saffron-dyed yarn, in preparation for weaving an honored Lama new robes. The yarn is both perfumed and blessed by the sandalwood. Traditions Santal, or Sandalwood, has been continuously used by Asian perfumers and healers for over 4,000 years. It is the essential ingredient in many Ayurvedic medicines. Asian healers would prescribe it as a disinfecting incense, to be used in sickrooms, hospitals and recovery areas. Incense cedar, redolent of other times and other traditions, is also a disinfectant and anti-depressant. The combination of cedar and santal echoes an ancient formula used in the temples of India, Babylon and Tibet. Cedar is said to activate fierce guardian spirits, while sandalwood invokes the gentling power of the Great Goddess.
