Traditions The rich tapestry of Turkish and Byzantine cultures might pale when compared to the region`s botanical offerings -- for it is the homeland of the original rose, tulip, narcissus, lilac and carnation. Perennial Carnation -- known as dianthus, pink or gillyflower -- is grown in a fragrant array of sizes, colours and frilly varieties. The spice-scented flower is now cultivated throughout the Mediterranean, France, California, South America, New Zealand and Britain`s Scilly Isles. Medieval herbalists and Elizabethan perfumers concocted healing balms made of gillyflower or pink, a form of dianthus. Smelling a nosegay of fresh pinks was said to relieve a breaking heart. Although the fresh flowers possess a zesty clove note, carnation aroma is impossible to capture in a bottle. Perhaps, though, a whiff of Turkish Carnation might ease a lovelorn heart or trigger thoughts of ancient shrines and long-ago delights.
